The U.S. Mission to the EU is seeking a Public Diplomacy Intern in the Office of Public Affairs.
This is a voluntary, unpaid internship covering the period March 2012 to May 2012.

Students currently enrolled in a university program in Belgium

Position:
Unpaid, 3-month Internship

Opening Date:
February 3, 2012

Closing Date:
February 12, 2012

Work Hours:
Full-time - 40 hours per week
Regular office hours: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. 

Position requires occasional work outside normal business hours. The U.S. Mission observes both U.S. and Belgian national holidays.


The press and public diplomacy intern is fully integrated into the public affairs team and may be given significant responsibilities related to the planning and execution of a variety of U.S. Mission public events, ranging from press conferences and interviews, to cultural and think tank events, to receptions and debates.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

● Assists in the planning and execution of public events and social media outreach.
● Sets up events for outreach to EU institutions.
● Prepares press clips and monitors media for breaking news and developments of interest to the U.S. government.
● Performs research as necessary on key topics in the transatlantic relationship.
● Participates in meetings with Mission economic and political sections; keeps informed on developments across a wide range of policies.
● Updates contacts database and performs email outreach as directed.
● In addition, the public diplomacy intern can expect to be involved in a number of special projects. Recent interns have assisted with the visits of the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security, the Attorney General and other senior administration officials.

The ideal candidate will:

● Have a strong academic record and demonstrate a broad knowledge of EU affairs or U.S-EU relations.
● Have interest in a career in public relations, communications or international media.
● Be fluent in English. Other European languages a plus. 
● Be a ‘people person’ with a sense of humor and able to quickly establish effective working relationships.
● Be an excellent team player who shows initiative and has a ‘can do’ attitude. ● Have well developed drafting and analytical skills; able to write clearly.
● Be able to communicate confidently about current events.
● Actively use social media and be tech-savvy. Twitter, and photo/video editing skills a plus.
● Have the ability to plan and thoroughly prepare events to the smallest detail, but also the
flexibility to deal with last-minute changes. Event-management experience a plus.
● Exercise sound judgment, tact and discretion when dealing with the public.


Important Information:

Internships at the U.S. Mission are unpaid voluntary positions designed to complement the intern’s
education by giving them the opportunity to work in the foreign affairs arena.

The successful candidate must:

● Be enrolled in a Belgian university and have the right to work in Belgium on a full-time basis.
● Provide documentation from their university verifying their current status as student and giving
permission to the student to participate in the internship program.
● Be at least 18 years of age and have completed their first year of university and provide
transcripts to demonstrate a strong academic record.
● Be available for a minimum of ten consecutive weeks, full time.
● Prove that they are insured for the duration of the internship.
● Be able to obtain a sensitive but unclassified security clearance.
